PictureThis Release 4 is THE low-cost "screen preview" DRAWING AND TYPESETTING program with PostScript output, for professional quality SCALABLE VECTOR-MAPPED (NOT bit-mapped) illustrations, flyers, two-dimensional data plots, ads, posters, etc., etc. -- even simple-to-draw cartoon faces (great fun for kids of all ages!). All you need is an IBM PC, XT, or AT compatible with at least 512 KB RAM (640 KB recommended; XMS or EMS allows larger drawings), CGA, EGA, or VGA video compatibilty (including Hercules graphics with software or hardware CGA emulation), at least one disk drive (360 KB or higher capacity), and MS-DOS or PC-DOS 2.X or higher (not tested with 4.X or 5.X). You can use a mouse if you want, but you don't have to. Included on the THREE distribution disks for this "Shareware" Version of PictureThis Release 4 are a complete manual, a tutorial, other documentation, several sample drawing files, utility programs, and, of course, the PictureThis program. THE "SHAREWARE" VERSION OF PictureThis Release 4 IS NOT "CRIPPLED" IN ANY WAY. IT IS IDENTICAL TO THE REGISTERED VERSION, EXCEPT THAT THE SIGN-ON SCREEN (WITH SEVERAL SECONDS DELAY SO YOU CAN READ ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF REGISTERING!) CAN BE BYPASSED IN THE REGISTERED VERSION TO SAVE TIME. Then why register? There are three "bonuses" for those who register: (1) a ca. 200-page printed manual, typeset/illustrated using PictureThis; (2) unlimited phone/mail support; (3) a utility program to allow ANY PostScript font (as long as it has an AFM file), even a third-party downloadable font, to be used with PictureThis. (For more details on the differences between the "Shareware" and Registered Versions, see the text file RSDIFF.TXT, which will be accessible after you install PictureThis on your computer. The file ORDER.TXT, also accessible after installation, is a convenient order form to use when registering.) The Registered Version costs $75.00 (plus $5.00 shipping outside North America; U.S. funds only); no credit cards -- checks and money orders only. BACK UP THE ORIGINAL DISTRIBUTION DISKS For safety, please don't try to run the program from the originals. The disks are NOT copy-protected in any way, so you can use DOS "DISKCOPY" command to duplicate the distribution disks. Label the back-up disks #1, #2, and #3 to correspond with the numbers of the distribution disks. 2. USING THE BACK-UP DISKS, MAKE WORKING COPIES OF THE FILES Do ONE of the following procedures, depending on your computer's configuration: IF YOU HAVE A HARD DRIVE: 1. Make a directory called \PICTHIS4 on your hard disk and copy all files on back-up disks #2 and #3, and all files on back-up disk #1 EXCEPT THOSE IN THE \COMPRESS DIRECTORY to the \PICTHIS4 directory, preserving the sub-directory structure. In other words, you should end up with \PICTHIS4 having two subdirectories, \FONTS and \KARTOON. 2. Make \PICTHIS4 the default directory and extract the files from MISCS.EXE, TXT1.EXE, TXT2.EXE, TXT3.EXE, and UTILS.EXE by running each file in turn (for example, key in MISCS and press Enter to run MISCS.EXE). To save disk space, you can delete MISCS.EXE, TXT1.EXE, TXT2.EXE, TXT3.EXE, and UTILS.EXE from your hard disk after extracting their files. 3. Now do ONE of the following. For CGA graphics, rename CHS.CFG in the \PICTHIS4 directory to PICTHIS.CFG. Or, for EGA graphics, rename EHS.CFG in the \PICTHIS4 directory to PICTHIS.CFG. Or, for VGA graphics, rename VHS.CFG in the \PICTHIS4 directory to PICTHIS.CFG. 4. You can run PictureThis from the \PICTHIS4 directory by keying in PICTHIS4 and pressing Enter. You should see the sign-on screen within a short time. IF YOU HAVE TWO 360KB FLOPPY DRIVES AND NO HARD DRIVE: 1. Label two floppy disks "PICTHIS4 STARTUP DISK" and "PICTHIS4 RUN DISK," respectively. 2. DISKCOPY back-up disk #2 to the PICTHIS4 STARTUP DISK. 3. Delete the file PICTHIS4.OVL from the PICTHIS4 STARTUP DISK. 4. Copy the files PICTHIS4.EXE and PTS4D.OVR from back-up disk #1 to the PICTHIS4 STARTUP DISK. 5. Format the PICTHIS4 RUN DISK and copy the file PICTHIS4.OVL from back-up disk #2 to the PICTHIS4 RUN DISK. 6. Next, format five floppy disks, and label them "PICTHIS4 MISC DISK," "PICTHIS4 TEXT #1 DISK," "PICTHIS4 TEXT #2 DISK," "PICTHIS4 TEXT #3 DISK," and "PICTHIS4 UTILITY DISK," respectively. 7. Copy MISCS.EXE from back-up disk #3 to the PICTHIS4 MISC DISK, copy TXT1.EXE from back-up disk #3 to the PICTHIS4 TEXT #1 DISK, copy TXT2.EXE from back-up disk #3 to the PICTHIS4 TEXT #2 DISK, copy TXT3.EXE from back-up disk #3 to the PICTHIS4 TEXT #3 DISK, and copy UTILS.EXE from back-up disk #3 to the PICTHIS4 UTILITY DISK. 8. To extract the files from MISCS.EXE, TXT1.EXE, TXT2.EXE, TXT3.EXE, and UTILS.EXE place, in turn, each of the disks that you just made in the default drive and run the program on it. (For example: to extract the files from MISCS.EXE, with the PICTHIS4 MISC DISK in the default drive, key in MISCS and press Enter.) 9. If you want to save space on the disks, you can delete MISCS.EXE, TXT1.EXE, TXT2.EXE, TXT3.EXE, and UTILS.EXE from the working disks. 10. Now do ONE of the following. For CGA graphics, rename CFS.CFG on the PICTHIS4 MISC DISK to PICTHIS.CFG and then copy it to the PICTHIS4 STARTUP DISK. Or, for EGA graphics, rename EFS.CFG on the PICTHIS4 MISC DISK to PICTHIS.CFG and then copy it to the PICTHIS4 STARTUP DISK. Or, for VGA graphics, rename VFS.CFG on the PICTHIS4 MISC DISK to PICTHIS.CFG and then copy it to the PICTHIS4 STARTUP DISK. 11. You can run PictureThis by putting the PICTHIS4 STARTUP DISK in drive A: and keying in PICTHIS4 and pressing Enter. You will be prompted for the path of the overlay; put the PICTHIS4 RUN DISK in drive B: and key in B: and press Enter. You should see the sign-on screen within a short time. The PICTHIS4 RUN DISK can be used to store drawing, clip art, and EPS files. The PICTHIS4 RUN DISK must remain in the drive while you are running PictureThis. If you remove it, the program may crash. Be sure to copy any files that you will need to the PICTHIS4 RUN DISK before you run PICTHIS4. IF YOU HAVE AT LEAST ONE HIGH-DENSITY FLOPPY DRIVE AND NO HARD DRIVE: 1. Format three high-density floppy disks and label them "PICTHIS4 RUN DISK," "PICTHIS4 TEXT DISK," and "PICTHIS4 MISC DISK." 2. Copy the PICTHIS4.EXE and PTS4D.OVR files on back-up disk #1 to the PICTHIS4 RUN DISK. 3. Copy all of the files in the root directory on back-up disk #2 to the PICTHIS4 RUN DISK. 4. Make a directory named \FONTS on the PICTHIS4 RUN DISK and copy all of the files in the \FONTS directory on back-up disk #2 to the new directory. 5. Make a directory named \KARTOON on the PICTHIS4 RUN DISK and copy all of the files in the \KARTOON directory on back- up disk #2 to the new directory. 6. Copy the files TXT1.EXE, TXT2.EXE, and TXT3.EXE on back- up disk #3 to the PICTHIS4 TEXT DISK. 7. Copy the files MISCS.EXE and UTILS.EXE on back-up disk #3 to the PICTHIS4 MISC DISK. 8. To extract the files from MISCR.EXE, TXT1.EXE, TXT2.EXE, TXT3.EXE, and UTILS.EXE, with the appropriate disks in the default drive in turn, run each of the programs AND, IF THE PICTHIS4 TEXT DISK IS A 720KB DISK, YOU MUST DELETE EACH TXT*.EXE PROGRAM AS SOON AS IT HAS BEEN RUN TO MAKE SURE THERE WILL BE ENOUGH SPACE FOR THE ALL OF THE EXTRACTED FILES. With the PICTHIS4 MISC DISK in the default drive, key in MISCS and press Enter; when disk activity has stopped, key in DEL MISCS.EXE and press Enter; when disk activity has stopped, key in UTILS and press Enter; when disk activity has stopped, key in DEL UTILS.EXE and press Enter. With the PICTHIS4 TEXT DISK in the default drive, key in TXT1 and press Enter; if the PICTHIS4 TEXT DISK is 720KB, when disk activity has stopped, key in DEL TXT1.EXE and press Enter; when disk activity has stopped, key in TXT2 and press Enter; if the PICTHIS4 TEXT DISK is 720KB, when disk activity has stopped, key in DEL TXT2.EXE and press Enter; when disk activity has stopped, key in TXT3 and press Enter; if PICTHIS4 TEXT DISK is 720KB, when disk activity has stopped, key in DEL TXT3.EXE and press Enter. 9. Now do ONE of the following. For CGA graphics, rename CFS.CFG on the PICTHIS4 MISC DISK to PICTHIS.CFG and then copy it to the PICTHIS4 RUN DISK. Or, for EGA graphics, rename EFS.CFG on the PICTHIS4 MISC DISK to PICTHIS.CFG and then copy it to the PICTHIS4 RUN DISK. Or, for VGA graphics, rename VFS.CFG on the PICTHIS4 MISC DISK to PICTHIS.CFG and then copy it to the PICTHIS4 RUN DISK. 10. You can run PictureThis by putting the PICTHIS4 RUN DISK in drive A: and keying in PICTHIS4 and pressing Enter. You should see the sign-on screen within a short time. The PICTHIS4 RUN DISK has space to store drawing, clip art, and EPS files. The PICTHIS4 RUN DISK must remain in the drive while you are running PictureThis. If you remove it, the program may crash. Be sure to copy any files that you will need to the PICTHIS4 RUN DISK before you run PICTHIS4. IF YOU HAVE ONE 360KB FLOPPY DRIVE AND NO HARD DRIVE: 1. Format six floppy disks and label them "PICTHIS4 STARTUP DISK," "PICTHIS4 MISC DISK," "PICTHIS4 TEXT1 DISK," "PICTHIS4 TEXT2 DISK," "PICTHIS4 TEXT3 DISK," and "PICTHIS4 UTILITY DISK," respectively. 2. Copy PICTHS4C.EXE in the \COMPRESS directory of back-up disk #1 to the root directory of the PICTHIS4 STARTUP DISK DISK. 3. DISKCOPY the contents of back-up disk #2 to a seventh floppy disk labeled "PICTHIS4 RUN DISK." 4. Delete PICTHIS4.OVL from the PICTHIS4 RUN DISK, copy PICTHS4C.OVL in the \COMPRESS directory of back-up disk #1 to the root directory of the PICTHIS4 RUN DISK, and copy PTS4D.OVR on back-up disk #1 to the PICTHIS4 RUN DISK. 5. Copy MISCS.EXE on back-up disk #3 to the PICTHIS4 MISC DISK, copy TXT1.EXE on back-up disk #3 to the PICTHIS4 TEXT1 DISK, copy TXT2.EXE on back-up disk #3 to the PICTHIS4 TEXT2 DISK, copy TXT3.EXE on back-up disk #3 to the PICTHIS4 TEXT3 DISK, and copy UTILS.EXE on back-up disk #3 to the PICTHIS4 UTILITY DISK. To extract the files from these programs, with the PICTHIS4 MISC DISK in the default drive, key in MISCS and press Enter; with the PICTHIS4 TEXT1 DISK in the default drive, key in TXT1 and press Enter; with the PICTHIS4 TEXT2 DISK in the default drive, key in TXT2 and press Enter; with the PICTHIS4 TEXT3 DISK in the default drive, key in TXT3 and press Enter; and with the PICTHIS4 UTILITY DISK in the default drive, key in UTILS and press Enter. To save disk space, you can delete MISCS.EXE, TXT*.EXE, and UTILS.EXE from the working disks. 6. 7. You can run PictureThis by putting the PICTHIS4 STARTUP DISK in drive A: and keying in PICTHS4C and pressing Enter. You will be prompted for the path of the overlay (PICTHS4C.OVL). Remove the PICTHIS4 STARTUP DISK from drive A: and insert the PICTHIS4 RUN DISK. Key in a: and press Enter. You should see the sign-on screen within a short time. There isn't much room on the PICTHIS4 RUN DISK for drawing, clip art, and EPS files; you'll probably want to delete all of the \KARTOON directory files and some of the \FONTS directory files after you become familiar with how to use PictureThis. The PICTHIS4 RUN DISK must remain in the drive while you are running PictureThis. If you remove it, the program may crash. Be sure to copy any files that you will need to the PICTHIS4 RUN DISK before you run PICTHS4C. Note that because of disk space constraints, you are using the (slower) compressed-overlay version of PictureThis. 3. TAKE A LOOK AT THE DOCUMENTATION PictureThis is documented completely in various text files (with extension .TXT; these pure-ASCII files can be viewed in a word processor, TYPEd, or printed out by COPYing them to PRN), including a complete manual (MANUAL1.TXT through MANUAL7.TXT) and a step-by-step tutorial (TUTOR1.TXT and TUTOR2.TXT). If you are already familiar with Release 3 of PictureThis, you should read 34DIFF.TXT to quickly learn about the new features in Release 4. If you are completely new to PictureThis, we recommend that you leaf through the manual for an overview of the program, then follow the tutorial. The "Kartoons" mode is a fun way to learn about the capabilities of PictureThis -- see the manual for more details. Remember that, in the program, on-line help in the form of a full-page menu showing all currently valid keys and their functions usually can be accessed simply by pressing ?. 4. HAVE FUN! THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THE SHAREWARE MARKETING CONCEPT!!
